Tips for your resume. Mix of bite-sized hacks and deep dives. Updated regularly.

Skills and Interests section

No one reads them, but they are useful for ATS bots. So include them at the bottom of your resume. and write everything. Literally, everything. Anything that is related to the job, you write it in.

This sounds obvious, but people just write one lines like python and javascript and call it a day. I am talking about EVERYTHING.

Write EVERYTHING. Write TOO MUCH.

Write for the bot, then the human

Focus on optimizing your resume for the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) bots first. It is very rare that humans will look and judge your resume. When a human is looking at your resume, that most likely means you are already considered for an interview.

So first, fill your resume with keywords and companies that gives you extra points for the bot. I will share more on this later.

Test your resume. Use ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Deepseek, or whatever AI you want. Honestly? Most companies are using some sort of AI or API from these AI models to filter your resume.

DO NOT WRITE YOUR FULL ADDRESS

DO NOT WRITE YOUR FULL ADDRESS. JUST WRITE YOUR CITY.

San Francisco Bay Area, New York Metro Area, Seattle, WA, or whatever. No one actually cares.

You are already the role you want

Pretend you are already in the role you want. Write your resume as if you are already doing that job. This mindset shift can help you highlight relevant skills and experiences more effectively.

For example, if you are currently an architect trying to become a software engineer, don't say you are a “Architecture professional seeking a career change to software engineering.” Instead, write your resume like “Software Engineer with a background in architecture.”

Similarly, write your the title and company you are applying to in the header of your resume.

For example, if you are applying to become a Data Analyst at Apple, write “Data Analyst | Apple” at the top of your resume. This is not to deceive anyone, this is just saying that the resume is for that role.

But in the eyes of the ATS bot? You are a perfect candidate with the exact title at a prestigious company, giving you an extra point on their scale.
